Walk through emerald-green rice paddies carved into volcanic hillsides over a thousand years ago. From Tegallalang's dramatic cascades to UNESCO-listed Jatiluwih, these terraces are Bali's most iconic landscape.
Plan My VisitBali's rice terraces are UNESCO-listed living landscapes carved over a thousand years ago, from Tegallalang's dramatic cascades near Ubud to Jatiluwih's 600-hectare expanse. Bali Malayali guides you along hidden paths with perfect timing for golden-hour photography and cultural insight.
Bali's rice terraces are not just beautiful landscapes — they are living monuments to the subak system, a cooperative water management tradition dating back to the 9th century. The subak is a democratic community of rice farmers who share irrigation water flowing from volcanic springs and rivers through an intricate network of canals, tunnels, and weirs. In 2012, UNESCO inscribed the subak system as a World Heritage Cultural Landscape, recognising its unique blend of agriculture, spirituality, and community governance.
Tegallalang, located 20 minutes north of central Ubud, is Bali's most visited rice terrace. The terraces cascade dramatically down a steep valley, creating the classic layered landscape seen in countless photographs. A network of walking paths runs through and alongside the paddies, with several viewpoint cafes perched on the ridgeline offering panoramic views. The terraces cycle through different visual stages: flooded and mirror-like after planting, vibrant green during growth, and golden before harvest, roughly every 3 to 4 months.
Jatiluwih in Tabanan regency is the larger and more spectacular of Bali's rice terrace sites, spreading across 600 hectares of gentle slopes with a backdrop of Mount Batukaru. As part of the UNESCO designation, Jatiluwih has been protected from overdevelopment, preserving its authentic agricultural character. Several trekking routes of varying length (1 to 3 hours) wind through the terraces, passing through small farming villages where traditional rice varieties are still cultivated using age-old methods.
For the best photography, visit either site in the early morning (7 to 9 AM) when the light is soft and golden, or in the late afternoon (3 to 5 PM) for warm directional light. Overcast days can also produce moody, atmospheric shots. The most photogenic period is when the terraces have been recently planted and the young rice is a vivid emerald green, usually visible within 2 to 6 weeks after planting.
