Ancient cliff temples, world-class surf, dramatic sunset Kecak performances, and luxury resorts perched above the Indian Ocean.
Plan Your Uluwatu TripUluwatu occupies Bali's dramatic southwestern cliff tip, home to an 11th-century sea temple, the famous Kecak fire dance at sunset, world-class surf breaks, and luxury resorts perched above the Indian Ocean. It is Bali at its most cinematic.
Uluwatu occupies the southwestern tip of the Bukit Peninsula, a limestone plateau that rises sharply from the Indian Ocean. The coastline here is defined by sheer 70-meter cliffs, hidden cave beaches accessible only by steep staircases, and some of the most powerful surf breaks in Indonesia. It is a landscape shaped by ocean forces over millennia, and it remains one of the most visually striking areas in Bali.
The Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu) is one of six key directional temples believed to protect Bali from evil spirits. Perched on the cliff edge, the 11th-century temple is home to a colony of grey long-tailed macaques and hosts the famous Kecak fire dance at sunset. The performance — involving 70 or more bare-chested men chanting "cak-cak-cak" in concentric circles as the sun drops behind the temple — is one of Bali's most unforgettable cultural experiences.
Surfers have revered Uluwatu since the 1970s. The main break, accessed through a cave at the base of the cliff, produces long, hollow left-hand barrels that work best from May to October. Padang Padang, made famous by the film "Eat Pray Love," is another world-class wave. For non-surfers, the cliff-side warungs above the breaks offer cold Bintang beers and front-row sunset views.
In recent years, Uluwatu has also become home to some of Bali's most luxurious resorts and beach clubs. The Bulgari Resort, Alila Villas Uluwatu, and Six Senses are built into the cliffs with infinity pools overlooking the ocean. Sundays Beach Club and Ulu Cliffhouse offer daybed access with funicular rides down to private beaches. Uluwatu suits couples, surfers, and anyone wanting dramatic natural beauty combined with world-class hospitality.
