Sunrise over calm waters, tree-lined cycling paths, family-friendly beaches, and the relaxed pace of Bali's original resort town.
Plan Your Sanur TripSanur is Bali's calm east-coast beach town, known for stunning sunrises, a 5 km cycling promenade, reef-protected family-friendly waters, and the authentic character of old Bali. It is the departure point for fast boats to the Nusa islands.
Sanur occupies Bali's east coast, facing the sunrise across the Badung Strait toward Nusa Penida. It was Bali's first planned beach resort area, developed in the 1960s when the Grand Bali Beach Hotel (now the Inna Grand Bali Beach) was built with Japanese war reparation funds. A local regulation limits buildings to the height of a coconut palm, preserving the low-rise, village-like character that has defined Sanur ever since.
The beach stretches for nearly 5 kilometers along a paved coastal promenade that is perfect for walking, jogging, and cycling. The reef-protected shore means calm, shallow water — a stark contrast to the powerful surf breaks on the west coast. Families with young children, older travelers, and anyone seeking tranquility over nightlife will find Sanur ideal. The sunrises here, with Mount Agung silhouetted on the horizon, are among the most beautiful on the island.
Sanur retains a genuine Balinese community atmosphere. The main street, Jalan Danau Tamblingan, is lined with local shops, art galleries, small hotels, and restaurants run by families who have lived here for generations. The Le Mayeur Museum, the former home of Belgian painter Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur, displays his works in a traditional Balinese compound steps from the beach. The Sanur Night Market, open every evening, offers affordable local food in a bustling outdoor setting.
Practically, Sanur serves as the departure point for fast boats to Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan. The harbor is just minutes from the main beach strip. Sanur is also closer to eastern Bali attractions — Candidasa, Amed, and the Besakih mother temple — than the west coast areas. It suits families, couples who prefer sunrise over sunset, and travelers who want authenticity over trendiness.

Experience authentic Bali with the people who know it best
We know exactly which Sanur hotels have kids' clubs, which restaurants welcome families, and which activities keep children engaged — from glass-bottom boat rides to kite flying on the beach.
Sanur is the ideal base for exploring eastern Bali. We plan efficient day trips to Candidasa, Tirta Gangga water palace, Amed snorkeling, and Besakih temple without the long drives from western Bali.
As the fast boat departure point for the Nusa islands, Sanur is where logistics matter. We book reliable operators, coordinate transfers, and ensure smooth connections for day trips or overnight island hops.
Sanur's community is tight-knit and welcoming. Our connections with local families, temple priests, and fishing boat captains open doors to experiences that outsiders simply cannot access.
