Dawn dolphin encounters, thundering jungle waterfalls, volcanic hot springs, and black sand serenity — the Bali that tourism forgot.
Plan Your Lovina TripLovina is North Bali's serene coastal stretch, famous for dawn dolphin encounters from outrigger boats, the thundering Sekumpul waterfall, volcanic hot springs, and black sand beaches far from the southern tourist crowds.
Lovina stretches along Bali's northern coast, approximately 10 kilometers west of the old colonial capital of Singaraja. The name covers a string of quiet fishing villages — Pemaron, Tukad Mungga, Anturan, Kalibukbuk, and Temukus — linked by a coastal road with volcanic black sand beaches on one side and lush foothills rising toward Bali's central mountain range on the other. The vibe here is radically different from southern Bali: no traffic jams, no beach clubs, no brand-name resorts.
Lovina's signature experience is the early morning dolphin trip. Before sunrise, traditional outrigger boats (jukung) launch from the beach to reach the calm waters where pods of spinner dolphins feed. Sightings are common — these waters are home to a resident population — and watching dozens of dolphins leap and spin against the dawn sky is a genuinely moving experience. Responsible operators maintain distance and do not chase the animals.
The surrounding countryside contains some of Bali's most impressive natural attractions. Sekumpul Waterfall, often called the most beautiful waterfall in Bali, plunges 80 meters through dense jungle in a series of cascades. Gitgit Waterfall is more accessible, reached by a short walk through clove and coffee plantations. The Banjar Hot Springs (Air Panas Banjar) offer natural sulfur pools set among tropical gardens, with dragon-head spouts feeding warm volcanic water into stone basins.
Lovina suits travelers who have already seen southern Bali and want to go deeper, those who prefer nature over nightlife, and anyone seeking genuine tranquility. Accommodation is modest but comfortable — family-run guesthouses and mid-range hotels dominate. The area is also a practical base for visiting Brahma Vihara Arama (Bali's largest Buddhist monastery), Ulun Danu Beratan lake temple, and the twin lakes of Buyan and Tamblingan in the highland caldera.
Dolphins, waterfalls, and the peaceful rhythm of northern Bali
Off-the-beaten-path itineraries through Bali's unspoiled north coast

Navigate Bali's remote north with guides who grew up there
We partner only with boat captains who follow responsible wildlife viewing practices — maintaining distance, no chasing, no engine revving. Our guides know the pods' patterns and position boats for natural encounters.
North Bali's waterfalls require local knowledge to reach safely. We arrange experienced guides for Sekumpul's jungle descent, know which falls are flowing strongest by season, and plan routes that avoid muddy dead ends.
Most tourists only see Lovina as a dolphin stop. We build multi-day northern circuits that include Munduk coffee plantations, twin lakes, Ulun Danu Beratan temple, and Pemuteran's coral gardens — the real depth of North Bali.
The drive from southern Bali to Lovina takes 2.5-3 hours through mountain passes. We arrange experienced drivers who know the winding roads, plan scenic stops, and time arrivals to avoid fog and rain.
